This website started out as a book idea: WordPress for Newbies. Substantial work was made on the book: I outlined it and wrote several multi-part chapters, I designed the cover, and purchased a domain name: this domain name. The feedback I kept getting, however, was, “Why a book? Doesn’t a website make more sense given the subject matter?” Those suggestions finally took root, and here we are today.

It is amazing that an open-source product like WordPress has encouraged so much activity and interest from people and entities whose values are antithetical to the open-source ethos. Without naming names, there are a lot of people from the apex of the WordPress business structure on down whose actions and spirit not only fail to exemplify the ideals of the community that has embraced WordPress, but actively mock those ideals.
How are we different? As the founder of WP4Newbies, I’ll be honest that I didn’t embrace the open-source movement at first. When I first started writing WordPress for Newbies, the book that evolved into this website, I struggled to really understand that mindset. It felt un-American to me. But it was clear to me from the beginning that the people at the top were not only taking advantage of those ideals, they were actively harming the community just to make a fast buck.
